Good Morning, Students!
Question of the day: What percentage of my income should I save?
A common guideline is to aim to save 20% of your income, based on the popular 50/30/20 rule. This rule suggests allocating 50% of your income to essentials (like housing and groceries), 30% to discretionary spending (like dining out or entertainment), and 20% to savings and debt repayment. However, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to savings. Your ideal savings rate depends on your unique financial situation.
If 20% isn’t realistic due to current expenses or obligations, start with what you can. Or if you’re in a position to save more, consider doing so to reach your goals faster. Saving may vary from paycheck to paycheck—some months, you’ll be able to put aside more, and others, less. The key is consistency; save something each time you’re able. Over time, even small, regular contributions can make a meaningful impact on your financial future.
